Quite a bit to chew on thanks Ken. Chomsky was revered when I did socio-ling & lang at Vic late 70s.
Love the Taxi clip. Didn't really watch it back in the day.
'Liar liar, trouser-suit on fire' was a my fave anti-Hillary Clinton meme of former times, though I was looking forward to a Prez Hillary of course. I came across her in Hagley Park when she was staying at The George here once for...CHOGM perhaps? Am also fond of 'trouser it'.
While you and your peers were struggling with deep structure and the like, I was partying (figuratively speaking!) with American poets like Allen Ginsberg and Frank O'Hara. Consequently, my grasp on the finer points of linguistics is tenuous at best, but I can recite what comes after "Lana Turner has collapsed!" from memory.
Lol. Took stage 1 Lit but realised Lit was for enthusiasts & picked up Econ, a mistake... but Geoff Bertram a gifted lecturer & remains one of about 3 pundits I bother reading.
My one & only panic attack was the morning of my transformational generative grammar final when I tumbled that my 3 yrs work came down to this...passed with a Bmin.

I don't think 'tenuous' is at all accurate.
You're very kind!
...silly me I thought at 2am while still awake..'liar liar, PANT-suit on fire' it was, though the link to mass vs count nouns still goes...
The US “math” and UK “maths” always intrigued me.
Of course the correct word is "maths".
